Lumbini is the hallowed
birthplace of Siddhartha Gautam, the Shakya prince, the eventual
Shakyamuni and the ultimate Buddha-the Enlightened One. This
nativity site identified by (he Indian Emperor Ashoka's
commemorative pillar erected over 2,200 years ago and rediscovered
in 1896, is the quintessential Buddhist heritage site, currently
renaissance by the internationally-supported Lumbini Development
Project.
The main attraction at Lumbini is the
Sacred Garden that is spread over 8 sq km and possesses all the
treasures of the historic area. The Mayadevi temple, currently under
renovation, is the main attraction for pilgrims and archaeologists
alike. The treasury of cultural and archaeological riches scattered
around Lumbini evokes the time and aura of the Buddha. Moreover, a
host of stupas, monasteries, meditation centers and bahals being
constructed in the International Monastery Zone by various countries
such as Japan, China India, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Srilanka,
France and Germany embodying their respective architecture reflects
the world brotherhood envisaged by the Apostle of Peace some 2, 500
years ago.
Some interesting places to see in Lumbini are
Tilaurakot, Niglihawa, Sagarhawa, Arorakot. Gotihawa , Kapilavastu
and many more. One of the most famous Buddhist places of pilgrimage
in the world is no doubt Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha. It
lies in Kapilavastu district of Western Nepal, which is about 250
k.m. exciting drive from Kathmandu. The nearest way to reach Lumbini
is by flight to Bhairawa, which is approximately 35 minutes flight.

1. Ashoka pillar with ancient inscription.
2. Mayadevi Mandir dedicated to the mother of Lord Buddha.
3. Siddhartha pond where Buddha was bathed after his birth.
